Can anyone help me with improving the Sims 3 graphics on my mac?

I have a macbook pro running on IOS 10.9.5 with 4000 1024 MB graphics card. Ive tried to download and install graphics mods but they do not change the in game quality. Im wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if macs just can't handle high resolutions.
I have pictures of the quality but idk how to post them
