Cannot start the process when the game is running

Hi
I recently (a few weeks ago) bought a new macbook pro. I installed all of my sims 3 games through origin, installed the latest super-patch, and had no problems with that. However, when I try to start the game I get the error "Cannot start the process when the game is running. Please quit the game and try again." I have tried several times to start via launcher, I have tried bypassing the launcher, I have searched for a solution online and been in contact with EA support several times. All they tell me to do is applying the patch and reinstall Origin, but nothing works. The game just won't start.

When I searched online I saw a lot of people posting about this problem in 2012, but no one had any solution other than trying to play the game offline (I've tried that too). Does anyone remember how it was solved three years ago? Or have any tips on how I can solve it now?

I have an:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
2,7 GHz Intel Core i5
8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

I know the graphics card isn't supported, but that doesn't really matter when i can't start the game at all.
My old mac was an macbook pro mid 2009, with 4GB memory. Don't remember what processor, but it was worse than what I have now. It ran sims 3 ok+, it wasn't perfect, but it ran well.

Can anyone help me?

Can't Download From Sims 3 Store

When I try to download from the Sims 3 Store I get this pop up that says "The application “The Sims™ 3” is not open anymore." I have the Sims 3 launcher open when it happens. I don't know how to fix it, I have a mac with OS X El Capitan. If anyone knows how to fix it please let me know thank you!

Mixing digital downloads and cd copies of expansions

Hi all, I was just wondering if it's possible to have downloaded expansions in my game with disk copies installed. In other words I downloaded the sims 3 onto my desktop as well as my laptop and I redownloaded some of my expansion packs but I want to purchase the rest on cd and install them since it's cheaper. If I install from the cd will it install into the game and then I won't need to insert the cd anymore when I play the sims 3?

Collecting information about Origin on Mac

Hello fellow Mac simmers

I am trying to collect information on Origin for Mac. I don't use it myself, since all my games are on discs, but I see increasing numbers of Mac simmers downloading digital versions of TS3 games through Origin. I've recently been trying to help answer queries from Mac simmers elsewhere. Many of them I can answer from personal experience or by linking to BluebellFlora's excellent guides here on the forums and on her website, but when it comes to Origin questions I sometimes am sometimes stumped. There are days when 90% of the questions are about Origin so I get the impression that it isn't working too well, at least not for Mac simmers.

To try to be able to answer more, I'm collecting information about Origin on Mac. I have pasted what I have so far in the second post. If any of you have any other information to share that you think could be useful to other Mac-users, please post it here so we can all learn from it.

Question Of The Day!

I have one particular query that I'm hoping someone technically-knowledgable can answer *looks around hopefully for Bluebell and Tremayne* :). This keeps coming up again and again, so if anyone can help, please do post.

A lot of people find that their digital downloads, of an expansion pack for example, fail for whatever reason. The game has not therefore been properly installed so they cannot play it, nor can they "uninstall" it (because it isn't there). Origin, however, acts as though it has already been installed, so they can't "install" it again either. This is real pickle.

I want to know if there's a way to deal with this without the player having to uninstall everything and start over.

Crinrict pointed me towards this guide about deleting game installers, but it is PC-specific: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/Help-Guide-All-in-one-fix-except-hardware-issues-PC-only/m-p/734448#M36281

Does anyone know how deleting game installers works on Mac operating systems?

Sims 3 and Sierra

Upgraded to Sierra today and Sims 3 seems to run just fine. Haven't played any but did start up the game to make sure that it started up.

***Edit***

It's plays very smoothly and wonderfully under Sierra. Played yesterday for several hours and didn't have any problems.

I'm about to upgrade my operating system

So I'm going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade my OS, and since it's been a while, this is going to involve taking my Mac in to the genius bar after backing up everything. My question is -- how likely is it that I will no longer be able to play Sims 3 once I've upgraded? Does anyone have any recommendations about what works best with Sims 3?

Disc won't read

I recently purchased a new Sims 3 starter pack for my Mac. It installed fine but every time I try to play the game the dashboard says there is no disc. I'm not sure if this is an optical drive issue or not. I've looked around and have seen it's not an uncommon problem but nothing I've read applied exactly to me. I tried to download a digital version of the game from EA but that totally bombed so I went back to disc, which bombed. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and what suggestions do you have? Please help!

Update 30th August 2015 -
Thanks to @tmethei, @the11thmoon, @wendyp7 for detailing their graphics cards and posting how they fixed their issue. We finally now have a fix that works! I've written a really comprehensive guide on my website with detailed instructions for all affected Macs :D

On this very helpful forum for Mac users we already have Tremayne's fantastic stickied thread - "A Mac user's best friend..." which has links to every possible conceivable problem you are experiencing on your Mac in relation to The Sims 3. Believe me, we have seen all issues before, your problem isn't new and you are not the only one experiencing it. That post should be your very first port of call before you even think about starting your own thread.

In the last few months the most frequent post is that the user's Mac will not load the game at all past the loading splash screen. The Launcher opens (trust me, you should be extremely thankful that that even happens), the user presses the big Play symbol, the game loads the blue splash screen with the green plumbob then nothing. Zilch. Nada. Nani mo. Niente. Zero. Not a sausage.

I'm going to hazard a guess now that you're thinking "but my Mac is superduper and new and can do absolutely anything including the washing up and take the kids to school". Yes, yes it can do all those things but it can't play The Sims 3. Why? Because your super pretty, all singing, all dancing Mac has a graphics card inside it's pretty aluminium casing, attached to the beautifully designed logic board, which isn't supported in the game. In plain speak, the game doesn't know what to do so gives up.

If you have one of the following graphics cards (GPU) in your Mac, you have a problem:
  • Intel Iris and Iris Pro - found in the following Macs:
    1. All Late 2013 Retina 13" MacBook Pros and subsequent models
    2. Entry level (cheapest) Late 2013 Retina 15" MacBook Pro and subsequent models
    3. Late 2014 mid (2.6 Ghz) and higher (2.8 Ghz) spec. Mac mini
    4. Entry level (cheapest) Late 2013 21" iMac
  • Intel HD 6000 - found in the following Macs:
    • Early 2015 11" MacBook Air
    • Early 2015 13" MacBook Air
  • AMD Radeon R9 M370X - found in the following Mac:
    • High spec. (most expensive) Mid 2015 Retina 15" MacBook Pro
- : - : - : -

Now, you have two options to try and get your game working:

Option 1 -
This is thanks to two wonderful Simmers who have taken the time to post how to possibly get your game working. It involves concentration and courage so pay attention! You must understand though that this fix doesn't appear to be working for everyone:
  1. Read this thread by @tmethei. It gives extremely clear and concise instructions on where to find the relevant files that you have to change for the game to recognise your graphics card. His instructions are for the Intel Iris Pro.
  2. If you have the AMD Radeon R9 M370X read this post and this post by @the11thmoon. They used tmethei's instructions but substituted Intel Iris for their AMD Radeon GPU.
  3. If you have the Intel HD 6000..... well, I'm afraid I don't have the exact line you need to add to the GraphicsCards.sgr file as no one with this GPU has bothered trying yet. You could always be the first and post your success story here to share with others.

Option 2 -
Try just running the base game with no Expansion or Stuff packs, patched up to date, 1.67.

- : - : - : -

And one more thing, please, please, please, PLEASE don't moan about it not working. We all know how awful it must be for you but here are the steps for you to try and get the game working on your Mac. EA aren't going to release a patch to miraculously fix this. The Sims 3 finished when the last Expansion Pack, Into The Future, was released in October 2013. The last patch, 1.67, was released in January 2014. No one else can do this but you, there is no magic fix. You are all on your own.

I highly recommend you also read Caspin's very helpful thread and WinMacSims3's equally helpful thread. Yes, we have an overload of threads on this issue but us helpers hope that by saturating the Mac forum with posts about the same thing but with different titles, it may stop the same threads being posted over and over and over again. Capisce?

If you can add anything constructive to this thread then it would be most welcome :)

Can't log in through Sims3 Launcher

Hello,

Has anyone had any issues logging in to the launcher?

The launcher won't let me sign in, and it won't save my account name or password. I enter the information, the prompt closes, and goes back to the launcher screen. I've reset my password, and reinstalled the game and expansions. I have no issues signing in to the Sims3 site or store. The game is at the latest patch. I have no other issues with the game. I can't access any of my store content now because I can't log in.

I have emailed tech support, but haven't had any useful advice.

Thanks

Game Crashing/Menu Backgrounds Not Showing Up

$

Hi, everyone! I'm new here, and made an account just to post about this.

I used to have the Sims 3 on my old 2011 Mac, along with the Pets expansion pack. It ran fine on there. Recently, I updated to a new 2016 Mac and dowloaded Origins so I could play DAII. I didn't realize that my Sims 3 account was connected to Origins, so I was able to download it (along with Pets) no problem last night. I got a pop up for an update this morning, and I updated the game before opening it to play.

But there's a problem.

Whenever I boot up the game, everything's running smoothly. However, I go into Create A Sim, and the backgrounds to certain menus are just... missing. Like if I go into the customizer, I can see the color wheel and some of the text, but there's no background and I have to blindly click around on the screen to exit the menu. Same for the area with the traits, and I can't go over to pick my Sims' favorite color/food/etc. And if I try to create a new sim to add to the one I already have, or click "OK" to go and finish the family of 1 I've been working on, the game freezes completely or crashes. Can someone please help me?

First of all, I'd really like to thank BlueBellFlora for all the work, time and patience that she has put into researching and putting together many tips and tricks for the Mac users. This is a Mac user's Best Friend. Read this thread before posting any problems and I'm sure you'll find an answer to your question or concern. Caspinwall, itsaprilXD and tamalinn also have contributed to this thread and many guides other as well.

The next thread is from caspinwall and details problems and solutions with using Origin. Yes, Origin does work on the Mac side. Yes, it is your best friend if you lose your disk and have registered your game. If there is a problem with a game not showing up in your Origin account and you have registered it, you will need to contact EA support.

http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/727857/collecting-information-about-origin-on-mac/p1

And lastly not to toot my own horn, here is a thread about how to patch your game correctly and safely. I am patched to the current patch 1.67 and run all of the EP's and SP's as well as a lot of Store items and sets. My game is stable and runs fine. I haven't tried to run it on high graphics settings lately, but I'm sure it will run fine.

We have another thread here that may help with the Disk Authentication Errors that several folks have had. It leads to the EA Help Forums.

http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/MAC-Disk-Verification-Error/m-p/3106024#M163986

If you are trying to play Sims 3 on a newer Macbook, here is a list of the new Macs which have the Iris Intel Graphics cards. Please be advised that Sims 3 does NOT recognize this brand of graphics card and you may experience weird graphics or the game may not start at all. There is a workaround since Sims 3 will never be updated again.

http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/840249/macs-that-have-intel-iris-graphics#latest

So Mac users, join me in thanking these wonderful people who have researched and tested these solutions. I know I really appreciate all their hard work and time to write these guides. :D

Sims 3 on Mac

Okay so I'm going to try to be brief, but here's my problem.
I just spent a couple hours of my night trying to get the Sims 3 to work on OS X El Capitan. I have gone between calls to EA and calls to Apple multiple times and I'm so incredibly frustrated. I've played the Sims 3 for years and I love it, and I'm still playing it because, at the moment, I prefer the Sims 3 over the Sims 4. I'm very very confused as to why EA hasn't made the Sims 3 available on the most recent Mac operating system. The person on the phone told me that the most recent operating system that the Sims 3 runs smoothly on was 10.9.5 which is OS X Mavericks, which is around 2 years old. I paid hundreds of dollars to EA for all the items I own for the Sims 3, and I know many others have also, so it seems insane to me that I can't even play the game! Can anyone from EA say if they're working on a patch or something? I'm very very upset.

Is it really worth to buy Sims 3 on Mac?

I recently decided to buy Sims 3 on Mac as I do love the sims series, and as I was an avid Sims 2 fan, I wanted to buy the Sims 3. But I'm beginning to regret my decision. I foolishly bought it straight away off Origin, without looking into any of the problems the game comes with on Mac, although I wasn't expecting there to be many, in all fairness if you're buying a game of someone like Origin you'd expect you would be able to do everything the game has to offer, no matter what platform you play it on. I bought this game with the intention to start a sims series as I'm quite a creative person and I have nothing better to do with my life... Anyway, I immediately noticed the graphics were awful on the game, so I begin to change around all of the graphics and have a play around. After restarting my game of course I come across the usual graphic problems that you come across when playing the Sims 3 on Mac. I spent most of my evening reading forums and coding so I can get my game to work. Eventually it did, but it came at a cost. I can't make more than 1 person on Create-A-Sim without them turning an odd rainbow hue and making my game crash. Create-A-Sim is the furthest I've got as my short patience gets the better of me. Each time I try and approach this game with an open mind, but it eventually ends in me raging - just like now. I spent a good £30 on the game, it was also supposed to include High-Tech Stuff, and the Late Night EP, but when I installed them I couldn't load the game, all I got was an error message, so I can only play the base game. To be honest I can't be bothered to keep spending night after night coding and clicking through forums. I must say a thank you to all of the helpful people on the Mac forums, the community have been 10x better than EA and Origin have been to me. The trouble of living in a house where all we have are Apple products is that I won't be able to play this game anytime soon, unless I buy a laptop or desktop and I don't think I'm financially prepared to do that, as I'm only a Secondary School/High School student. I'm also going to have a little rage about CC, Macs don't to .package files when it comes to the sims, so any hair or clothes I want that are .pkg, I can't install them onto Sims. I don't know if there is a way around it, there probably is but I don't know if I can be bothered.

If you haven't been bothered to read of that I don't blame you, but in conclusion I would say it definitely isn't worth it to buy Sims 3 on Mac if you're like me and are a bit lazy. But if you are prepared to go through forums for a long time to modify your game, then maybe you should try it out. Personally there is only so much I can do before I begin to get agitated, but that's just a personal preference. Unfortunately the Sims 3 is a great game but EA has put no effort into the making of Sims 3 for Mac, it's a rather plum effort. I think that if you're going to release a game, at least release it so it works properly - as you shouldn't charge people for something that is barely compatible with their software.

Rant over! I have tried to read a lot of forums about all the problems I'm experiencing, but I'm not prepared to delve into the world of Package Contents and all that plum. Any help would be appreciated though - and I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced these problems?

NO DISK AUTHORISATION - HELP?

Hey!.
I was wondering if anyone could help me. For a while, I have been having problems with my Sims. Whenever I try to play it keeps on saying: "No Disk Authorisation." I was playing Sims 3 Supernatural as my latest installed disk. I have tried re installing the expansions and at first I thought it was because my disk was slightly scratched. However, I recently bought Sims 3 Into The Future hoping that would solve my problems and it did for the first session I played it. Just now I tried to play it again and the error came up twice. Im getting really annoyed with this error as i've potentially wasted money if I cannot fix it. For any further information, I use a Mac and have no downloads installed.

Thank you. x

Limiting FPS on Mac?

Hi all,

I decided to install The Sims 3 on my MacBook Air a couple days ago, and I'm getting 80+ FPS in Bridgeport (I'm happy, but my laptop gets really hot, about 75-80C). This used to happen in The Sims 4 as well, but I limited my frame (with the frame limiter in the Options.ini file to 30, and my laptop doesn't go over 60C.

Is there a frame limiter in The Sims 3 (or settings), or an app that will let me do that?

I mean, 80FPS is great and smooth, but my laptop gets way too hot, and my fans just go full blast.

Thanks in advance,
Alex

I have been playing sims for over a year with no problems at all, until i purchased the Fast Lane Stuff expansion pack. Now I can't play anything, the "An unknown error has occurred" box just appears. I have tried uninstalling and installing numerous times, now deciding to just give up on Fast Lane Stuff but now as I am trying to reinstall my game, the error message is appearing again. I have never had this problem until i tried to install Fast Lane. Now it has messed up my whole game!

Has anyone had any experience with this issue or can anyone help?

Thanks

Sims 4 Overheating?

So, I have a Macbook Air (who, of course I named Simon) which is about 3 months old or so. Since I usually spent my time playing The Sims 4 on my old Toshiba laptop, I decided to download Origin on ol' Simon here and give the game a shot on OS. I managed to load the game successfully and it was working great, even better than on my Toshiba-- until the computer started heating up. I could hear the fans going, but it was still rather hot to the point of burning me! The computer heated up in a matter of 5 minutes until I decided to log off the game and uninstall it, along with Origin. I really want to play, but I'm horrified by the heating issues here. I also have Sims 3, but I have not tried it. Any advice on the heating and how to handle it or something? :(

Issue clicking objects in Sims 3... can anyone help?

Hello all,

I have just installed my Sims 3 games (have all EP's and most SP's) and am playing on a 27" retina iMac, but using bootcamp and playing on Windows 10.

When I click objects, it often seems like it only recognizes a small portion of the object, and I have to move the camera around sometimes before I can click on furniture, objects, sims etc. It is super annoying! Does anyone else have this problem? I don't know what is causing it. Gah!
